Wireless LAN
Today wireless LAN technology is a secure and multi-purpose
way for business to utilize for a number of applications.
In order to have full and seamless coverage within,
and in fact, outside the perimeter of your building
if required, it takes proper planning and a detailed
site survey to ensure the access points (A.P.’s)
are providing full and seamless coverage for hand
off’s (the ability to move throughout the
coverage area with out interruption). Real time
voice, LAN access, Bar Coding and Scanning, RFID
and wireless security cameras are some of the benefits
and applications an open scalable wireless LAN infrastructure
brings to your network. The capacity for guests
to your facility to access their information is
greatly increased by giving them guest name and
password and allowing them internet access to check
e-mails or their own databases through their VPN.

Infrastructure mode wireless networking bridges
(joins) a wireless network to a wired Ethernet
network. Infrastructure mode wireless also supports
central connection points for WLAN clients. A
wireless access point (AP) is required for infrastructure
mode wireless networking. To join the WLAN, the
AP and all wireless clients must be configured
to use the same SSID. The AP is then cabled to
the wired network to allow wireless clients access
to, for example, Internet connections or printers.
Additional APs can be added to the WLAN to increase
the reach of the infrastructure and support any
number of wireless clients, AP’s can also
be meshed to allow installation without a network
drop (cable). This type of AP connects back to
the network switch by routing data through AP’s
that are wired back to the network switch and
are a great alternative to very expensive wiring
in hard to reach areas of a building.
Compared to the alternative, ad-hoc wireless
networks, infrastructure mode networks offer the
advantage of scalability, centralized security
management and improved reach.
